Cottown

This is a wee gem, a mud hut in Scotland. One tends to think of mud huts in warmer climes than Scotland however buildings constructed of mud were once common in this part of the world. Indeed the area around the Carse of Errol had extensive clay pits and one of the last few brickworks left in production can still be found near Errol.

The Cottown Schoolhouse constructed out of the good old traditional wattle and daub walls and thatched with reeds from the nearby and extensive reed beds on the Tay, is in the care of the National Trust for Scotland, although you would hardly know it as this place is not signposted from the Glencarse - Errol Road and is not open to the public except during the Doors Open Days.
