Castlecary

Many people would have you believe that the Roman invasion of Britain stopped at Hadrians Wall. The Romans built a second wall, The Antonine Wall across the Central Belt, starting at Bowling and finishing at Bo'ness.

The Romans did indeed go further than this, there are extensive roman camps and signal stations in Perthshire and there is the elusive battle of Mons Granpus, where the Romans fought and defeated a Pictish army. The strange thing is they never consolidated their victory.

Parts of the Antonine Wall still exist, this fragment is between the railway line and the hotel car park.

The wall was mainly made from turf protected by a ditch in front. The ditch is to the left, the wall to the right.

Beside the road through the village is a small memorial garden, commemorating two train crashes. A plaque on a cairn at the back of the garden reads,

"On and on through the driving snow the train thundered on until it crashed ar Castlecary and all those lives were gone."

"In memory of The Castlecary Rail Disaster, 10th December 1939 The Castlecary Rail Crash 9th September 1968 We will not forget."
