Fordell

Just outside Crossgates on the road to Mossmorran is a lay-by, hidden amongst the trees is a remnant of the early industrial revolution, a wagon railway.

The most distinctive feature about this railway is the track is much narrower than today's Standard Gauge, 4 ft 8 ins or 1.44m, the horse-drawn waggons had a much narrower wheel base.

Coal was mined at the nearby Donibristle pits and hauled to St.Davids Bay by horse drawn wagon, hence the narrowness of the track.
