Fife Stop Line

This page came about because of my attempt to help one of my daughters with her WW2 history project. It is simply too big for the normal run of the Trivial History web pages.

We went out and took some photographs of the Stop-line defences around Balbirnie, then went on to Star, Kingskettle and Tentsmuir, and we have only just scratched the subject.

For more information have a look at at the Defence of Great Britain Project web pages

The view from the bunker The inside of the bunker
The view from the bunker on the Markinch to Star road. Tanks would come rolling over the fields to converge on this road to cross the embankment. The inside of the bunker, the entrance way has been blocked up.
anti-tank pimples Kirkcaldy - Perth railway line
Over the wall on the road from Balfrag to Balbirnie are a set of anti-tank pimples. The view westwards. The Kirkcaldy - Perth railway line passes through on a high embankment forming a natural anti-tank defence
Kingskettle farmhouse Hidden pillbox
An innocent looking farm house outside Kingskettle. Look closely and you will see a cunning trap for the unwary Death amongst the Brussels Sprouts, a cunning, hidden pillbox built into the garden wall
Hidden pillbox From the railway bridge
Another hidden pillbox built into the wall of a kitchen garden The view from close to the pill box from the railway bridge. The pillbox at the top of the page is hidden just below the tree line.
Railway cutting spot the pillbox
The Kirkcaldy to Perth Railway line, this time a deep cutting forms an anti- tank defence. This bridge would have been almost certainly have been wired with explosives Spot the pillbox? Built into the kitchen garden wall in the background.
Cubes and Pimples Concrete wall
Near Leuchars, Cubes and Pimples, designed to stop tanks on the beaches. Barbed wire would have been threaded between them and the beach mined. This concrete wall is near Star. I think it would provide cover for the defenders.
Domed turret road bridge
Similar to an Allan Williams Turret, this armoured steel dome ,would have been an observation post and certain death for anyone trying to fight from inside. More on this turret Tanks? What Tanks? Even a simple bridge could be blown up to form a tank trap. This one is outside Star.
Cube and mould marks Cube and barbed wire
A Cube showing the marks made by the 6" planks of the mould. The concrete for the cubes was mixed and poured on site. A Cube with two uprights for a barbed wire fence.
