Powmill Circular
  Powmill CR

Starting from the monument car park with the information board, off the B996, turn left and go north for a short distance on the B996, before turning left at Gairney Bank into Hatchbank Road. Cross the motorway and follow the road to the T-junction.

Turn left, onto part of the North Sea Cycle Route, NCN 1, follow the road down to the junction with the B9097; alternatively turn right at the top of Hatchbank Road and then next left at the top of the small hill, passing the Cockairney farms. The tarred road disappears to become a rough farm track, follow this track all the way down to the T-junction at the bottom and turn right for Coldrain.

Otherwise, back on the main route, turn right onto the B9097 and follow the road past the bends to the next cross roads and turn right, signposted for Balado. At the top of the hill, turn left at Coldrain Farm and follow this road all the way through to the junction with the B9097. It is possible to miss out the Coldrain section by remaining on the B9097 and turning left after the chicken farm, signposted Aldie.

At the bottom of the Coldrain Road, turn right onto the B9097 and immediate left onto the Aldie, Powmill Road. The Aldie road will start to climb over a series of three gradual climbs to the top by the radio mast before descending steeply, followed by a short climb, another descent and a sharp left hand bend to arrive at Powmill. The Milk Bar on the left is a favourite “cake-stop” with many cyclists.

Turn left onto the A977 and then left again onto the A823, cycling through Powmill can be unpleasant, so there is the alternative of the footpath and walking the short distance to the Dunfermline Road.

The A823 will now start to climb gradually, near the top look out for the Cleish, Kinross signpost to the left. Turn left and descend steeply, past the farm down to a sharp right hand bend. The road then gently undulates as it heads towards Cleish, have a look at Aldie Castle to the left and later Cleish Castle on the right (none of them are open to the public.) This glen must have seen some turbulent times as three of the seven castles in Kinross-shire are located here.

A short distance past Aldie castle you pass through a farm yard with a grand house to the right, you will see a set of steps on the roadside for mounting horses without the need to hoist yourself up into the stirrups.

The road has one final climb before Cleish Castle and the descent into Cleish. If you have time have a look in the church yard as there is a fragment of a Celtic cross found locally.

Carry on through Cleish, to come to a T-junction of sorts, go straight on (or turn right) back onto the B9097, follow this road until you are close to the M90 Motorway and take a left hand turn signposted for The Fruix. At the end of the road, cross the motorway using the footbridge which brings you back to the starting point.
