Bartlett S.W. Sgt. 405994 RAAF 5-5-43 Spitfire P8582 Dunbar,5 miles NE, off, East Lothian.

His aircraft dived into the sea while he was engaged in air to sea firing. He has no known grave, his name is recorded on the Runnymede Memorial. Age 19

Bohamil Sima CET Sgt. 787535 Czech 18-8-41 Spitfire N3099 Ballinluig, near, Perthshire. While on Direction Finding homing practice, the aircraft spun out of cloud and crashed. Sgt. Sima was 25 years old, buried in Grangemouth Grandsable cemetery.
Brady R. Sgt. 1066638 RAF VR 5-9-41 Spitfire X4254 Auchterarder, near, Perthshire. Descended through cloud to ascertain his position and crashed into high ground. Sgt. Brady’s body left the station (6-9-41) for a private burial at home at Moresby St. Bridgets’ churchyard, Cumberland. Age 21

Aircraft dived into the ground cause unknown. Sgt. Bushell aged 23 and was buried at Grangemouth Grandsable Cemetery.

Butler W.M. P/O R10151 RCAF 18-6-42 Spitfire P8644 Bogside, Clackmannan-shire.

Killed while taking avoiding action against a possible collision. He dived steeply and as he tried to flatten out, a wing came off; his Spitfire crashed and was completely burnt out. Aged 21, and was buried in Grangemouth Grandsable Cemetery.

De La Bastita H.J.P. P/O.   Belgium 29-1-43 Spitfire P8594 Greathill near, Stirlingshire.

A pupil pilot went missing, two days later the remains of his aircraft were discovered in a plantation near Greathill.

Domiter Z. Sgt. 781259   22-11-41 Master T8782 Alloa, South of, Clackmannan-shire.

Crashed while engaged on an instrument flying exercise with Kpl Szumsky E. According to an eyewitnesses statement the aircraft was about 500ft when it did a roll and dived steeply into the ground.

Three Spitfires on a formation flying exercise collided into the hill in cloud. The sole survivor Sgt. V.P. Daly (Spitfire P8276), Sgt. Duda was an American serving with the R.C.A.F. Buried at Grangemouth Grandsable Cemetery.

Died of injuries sustained 5-5-41 at Larbert Military Hospital, 07l5 hrs, aged 24. He was buried in Chiselhurst, The Annunciation, churchyard, Kent.

Killed when his aircraft struck a tree low flying. Sgt. Ellsworth an American aged 24 was buried in Grangemouth Grandsable Cemetery.

Everiss C.G. P/O 41318 RNZAF 2-1–41 Spitfire P9497 Bannockburn, near, Stirlingshire

Spun into the ground at l72Ohrs. P/O Everiss was aged 26 buried in Grangemouth Grandsable cemetery.

Farren, E. B. Sgt. R138527 RCAF 25-2-43 Spitfire R6968 Boagstown Farm, near, Stirlingshire.

On emerging from a small cloud (possibly a snow cloud) his aircraft was seen to in some form of difficulties and crashed in what looked like an attempted forced landing. Sgt. Farren, 24 was buried in Grangemouth Cemetery.

Gardiner R. Sgt. 932502   20-10-41 Spitfire R6760 Strathallan Army Camp, Perthshire.

Whilst carrying out low level forced landing practice and aerobatics, his aircraft was seen by witnesses to go into a shallow dive from which he did not recover. The body of the late Sgt. Gardiner left Grangemouth for a private burial at Waltham Cross.

Garware R.D. W/O. 1190419 RAF VR 22-12-43 Spitfire P8547? Sheerdale, Clackmannan-shire.

F/Sgt. Garware, an Indian Hindu was seriously injured and died of his injuries 24 hours later. Crashed in force landing into field. Leigh (St. Catherine) Churchyard Gloucestershire, aged 25

Greszyczak B. F/Lt.     28-8-41 Master T8581 Maddieston, lm S of, Stirlingshire.

Crashed whilst practicing dummy attacks on another Master, T8541. Flt. Greszyczack got into a spin, dived into the ground and the aircraft burst into flames.

Grick J. P/O     12-9-41 Spitfire X4928 Leuchars, off, Fife.

Went into a spin and crashed into the sea during air-to-air firing practice.

Two Spitfires P7978 and X4914 collided and crashed. The other pilot, P/O. Edwards baled out unhurt. Sgt Hollis is buried at Bexley Heath Cemetery Kent, age 19

Sgt. Julian was taking off from the aerodrome when Sgt. Kippan taxied onto the runway, where they collided. One of the aircraft was burnt out and the other overturned and was completely wrecked. Buried in Grangemouth Grandsable Cemetery

Kippan L.D.R. Sgt. 79579 RCAF 17-12-41 Spitfire ?

Sgt. Kippan taxied onto the runway and into the path of a landing Spitfire flown by Sgt Julian. One of the aircraft was burnt out and the other overturned and was completely wrecked. Sgt. Kippan, aged 26 was seriously injured and died in hospital the following day. Buried in Grangemouth Grandsable Cemetery.

Koch T. Kpl. 784761   15-5-41 Spitfire L1018? Kpl. Koch collided with another aircraft while practicing a starboard echelon formation. The other aircraft made it back to Grangemouth successfully. Kpl./Sgt Koch,28 years old. Buried at Grangemouth Cemetery.
Leven D.G.P/O. 141710 RAF VR 14-6-43 Spitfire P8664 Moray Firth. Collided with Whitley LA847, 19 OTU, during fighter affiliation exercise and dived into Spey Bay. He has no known grave, his name is recorded on the Runnymede memorial.
Lukomski E.T. Pohor. 784481 Poland 24-11-41 Spitfire X4859? Avondale Estate, Grangemouth. Sgt. Lukomski, while engaged in a flying formation exercise, broke formation prior to landing and was seen from the ground to enter a wisp of cloud, on coming out of the cloud he started spinning and had not sufficient height to recover. Two Batmen from Avondale (House?) Estate extricated the pilot from the aircraft; he was unconscious and died shortly after being admitted to Sick Quarters, Polmont. Sgt. Lukomski, aged 23 buried in Grangemouth Grandsable cemetery.

Crashed whilst practicing dummy attacks on another Master, T8541. The body of P/O Mac Donald left the station en-route for for a private burial at Bangor Cemetery County Down Northern Ireland age 20

Malkiewicz W.E. Ppor.   Poland 17-4-42 Spitfire ? Falkirk, Stirlingshire. Spitfires R7073 and X4905 collided, ”one of the pilots was killed in the collision and the other was killed during an attempted forced landing.” P/O. Malkiewicz (24) was buried in Grangemouth Grandsable Cemetery.

Sgt. Markham was reported missing. A fortnight later the wreckage of his aircraft and his body was found “in the hills beyond” Alva. Age 22 Lincon (Newport) Cemetery Lincolnshire

Mc.Kie A.B. Sgt. R72679 RCAF 11-11-41 Spitfire L1083 Loch Tay, vicinity of. Missing, whilst engaged on a formation flying exercise, with another Spitfire piloted by Sgt. Argue, who landed at Kinloss refuelled and returned to Grangemouth. 14-12-41. The body of the late Sgt.Mc.Kie was discovered at Loch Tay and conveyed to Grangemouth. Sgt.Mc.Kie was buried in Grangemouth Grandsable cemetery.

RCAF 1-8-41 Spitfire X4777 Collided with Spitfire R7026 flown by Sgt. Walton, dived into the ground and burnt out. The aircraft were carrying out a tail chasing exercise. Sgt. Walton’s aircraft made it back to Grangemouth safely. P/O Minnick was a US citizen, 22 years old serving with the RCAF. Buried in Grangemouth Grandsable cemetery.

Killed in a mid-air collision with another Spitfire (P9371 flown by F/Sgt. Smith RE. RCAF). F/O. Mosselmans’ aircraft dived into the ground, F/Sgt. R.E.Smith landed safely, damage assessed Cat.B.

Flew into hillside in bad weather, and burnt out. Sgt. Slonski was aged 22 was buried at Grangemouth Cemetery.

    26-4-42 Spitfire P9555 Airdrie near, Lanarkshire. Crashed following a collision with P/O R.A. Watts aircraft (who brought his aircraft safely back to Grangemouth) P/P Peathy-Jones was buried at Eltham, his body left the station, 27-4-42.
Prerost Vaclav W/O     31-12-43 Master W8845 Dunnygask Farm, near Saline, Fife. Crashed on ferry flight from Grangemouth to Balado Bridge, aircraft flew into rising ground. “RTM. LET V.ZAL”. W/O Prerost, aged 25 is buried in Grangemouth Grandsable Cemetery.
Preston A.R. P/O.   RAF VR 1-7-41 Spitfire X4318 Cloon Hill, near Craighead Farm, Kinross-shire. Flew into the hill in bad visibility at 0930 hrs. He was buried in South Benfleet St. Mary’s churchyard, Essex.

The aircraft having been seen to dive into the ground from a low height, whilst circling in misty weather in the hills. Accident occurred at 1050hrs.

Sly R.R. P/O 403078 RAAF 17-10-41 Spitfire X4904 Maddy Moss, Ochils. Reported missing from a section attack exercise between Leuchars and Cupar, at ll55hrs. P/O Sly, age 21,was found in his burnt out aircraft, 21-10-41. Buried in Grangemouth Grandsable cemetery.
Stokes F/Sgt.     29-6-43 Spitfire P9429 Grangemouth Aerodrome. Sgt. Stokes took-off from the aerodrome in course pitch. The result was that the aircraft stalled and crashed just beyond the aerodrome perimeter and was completely burnt out.

Sgt. Szot collided and crashed with Sgt. Malec, who baled out successfully. Aircraft involved were P7776 & P8672.

Taylor G.G. Sgt. R60451 RCAF 26-9-41 Spitfire R6983 Bengengie Hill, near Alloa, Clackmannan-shire. Missing since 26-9-41, the wreckage of Sgt. Taylor’s aircraft was found on the hillside 29-9-41. Sgt.Taylor was aged 20 was buried in Grangemouth Grandsable cemetery.

Tyrrell F/O.     16-3-42 Spitfire X4911 Grangemouth Docks 3/4m off in Firth of Forth. F/O Tyrrell was attached to Grangemouth from Montrose and is buried in Grangemouth Grandsable Cemetery.
Unknown     10-3-41 Spitfire X4647 Ben Ledi, Northern spur, Perthshire. “A Spitfire which was being ferried from Northolt is missing. The aircraft was last seen in the vicinity of Loch Tay.12-3-41 wreck found, the aircraft is burnt out and temporally in an inaccessible position. No trace of the pilot could be found, but the snow around is clear of foot-prints 13-3-4l; the wreckage of the Spitfire was reached and the body of the pilot found, and brought to Grangemouth for burial.”
